This is a 4nights/5days safari in Uganda featuring chimpanzee trekking in Kibale forest national park and Kyambura gorge as well as wildlife in queen Elizabeth national park starting and ending in Kampala. This classic safari takes you to Kibale forest national park for an unforgettable chimpanzee trekking encounter in this magnificent tropical rainforest which is a home to one of the highest diversities and concentration of primates in Africa. Kibale hosts over 1500 chimpanzees and 12 other primate species including the rare L’Hoest’s monkeys. There over 375 bird species.

From Kibale proceed to Queen Elizabeth national park where you will enjoy game drives, a launch trip on the spectacular Kazzinga channel and chimp trekking adventure in the 100m deep forested Kyambura gorge. It’s one of the most biologically diverse parks in the world and with landscapes including grass savannah, acacia woodland, lakes, rivers, dense papyrus swamps, rainforest and extinct volcanic crater cones with lakes. The park hosts tree-climbing lions, leopards, buffaloes, elephants, hippos, giant forest hogs and chimpanzee plus much more as the checklist of mammals reach 96 mammals. Queen Elizabeth is also well known for its superb birdlife which includes over 600 bird species. The largest checklist of any protected area in east Africa making it the perfect destination of wildlife and bird lovers.

Day 1: Transfer to Kibale national park, visit Amabele caves and hike the fort portal crater field

Day 2: Chimpanzee trekking and Bigodi swamp walk

Day 3: Transfer to Queen Elizabeth national park, do a game drive and afternoon Kazzinga channel cruise.

Day 4: Game drive in the Ishasha sector for tree-climbing lions

Day 5: Do chimpanzee trekking in Kyambura gorge and transfer to Kampala



Day 1

Transfer to Kibale national park, visit Amabele caves and hike the fort portal crater field

After having breakfast at your hotel, embark on a 300km (5-6hours) drive to fort portal. You will enjoy the magical views of the lush green country side and impressive physical landscape including the views of Lake Wamala at a distance, close looks to Mubende inselbergs, the swamps of kyengegwa and kyenjojo before arriving in fort portal.

You settle in fort portal for lunch after connect to Amabele caves for a heritage encounter. The breast-like features are believed to be breasts of a young girl called Nyina Mwiru the mother of Ndahura the famous Muchwezi ruler who expanded the Chwezi Empire across the interlacustrine region.
From the caves, you hike the fort portal Crater Lake field to explore the effects of explosive volcanicity in the area. The area is marked by a range of crater hallows and some of them have been filled with water from crater lakes. The hike to the summit of kyengegwa hill offers panoramic views of the area and the distant Rwenzori Mountains. You will then connect to Kibale national park for relaxation, dinner and overnight.

Day 2

Chimpanzee trekking and Bigodi swamp walk

After a healthy breakfast, you will connect to Kanyachu visitor centre where you will meet the park ranger guide for briefing on how the trekking is conducted and he will lead you into the magnificent rainforest in Kibale for your unforgettable chimpanzee trekking experience which starts at 8am. The trekking experiences takes 2-3hours involving hikes through challenging forest landscapes covered by mature trees and verdant flora (371 tree species). Once the chimp is sighted, you’re allowed to spend one hour with these intelligent apes. You will watch them play, eating, feeding, patrolling their territories. Return for lunch and relax.
Connect to Bigodi wetland sanctuary for a wetland walk. The sanctuary is an eco-tourism site and so far the best in Uganda with over 200 bird species including the great blue Turaco. It is also a habitat for the swamp dwelling statunga antelope and several primates. Return for relaxation, dinner and overnight.

Day 3

Transfer to Queen Elizabeth national park, do a game drive and afternoon Kazzinga channel cruise.

After a cup of coffee, you will be transferred to Queen Elizabeth national park. Upon arrival, you will embark on a drive through the spectacular landscapes of the park to search for interesting wildlife such as lion, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, spotted hyenas to mention but a few. You will also encounter many bird species including flamingos, African skimmer, Ayres hawk eagle, west banded snake eagle among others. After the game drive you will return for lunch.
Have a afternoon relaxing launch cruise on the spectacular Kazzinga channel, you will encounter herds of hippos, crocodiles, elephants cooling off on the shores along with water birds such as saddle billed stork, pink-backed pelican, African spoon bill among others. The cruise takes 2hours. Retreat from the activity and undertake a game drive along the channel tracking for more wildlife as you connect to your lodge for relaxation, dinner and overnight.

Day 4

Game drive in the Ishasha sector for tree-climbing lions

After breakfast you will transfer to Ishasha sector 75km from the north of Queen Elizabeth national park driving along the impressive savannah protected landscapes. Upon arrival in the south of Queen Elizabeth national park, you embark on a game drive in search of the legendary tree climbing lions resting on fig tree branches in day time. The sector also supports other wild game including water bucks, kobs, buffaloes and elephants. After the game drive, return for relaxation, dinner and overnight.

Day 5

Do chimpanzee trekking in Kyambura gorge and transfer to Kampala

After breakfast embark on the chimpanzee trekking in Kyambura gorge where you slope down afforested gorge of 100m deep with sights of magical lush mature tropical forest thriving below sea level supporting counts of chimpanzees. Kyambura gorge also harbors other primates including black-and-white colobus monkeys, vervet monkeys, and red-tailed monkeys among others. Retreat from the encounter which takes 2-5hours and then embark on a 417km (7hour) drive to Kampala making a stopover at the equator for lunch, photos and the water experiment. Then continue your journey to Kampala.
